Primary Care Receives Critical Bump in Medicare Physician Fee Schedule
There’s positive movement ahead for family physicians in the recently finalized 2026 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule. In her latest AAFP Voices blog, AAFP President Sarah C. Nosal, MD, celebrates long-fought wins that strengthen support for primary care, including improved payment rates, recognition of comprehensive, relationship-based care, and new codes that advance behavioral-health integration.
Highlights include:
- Payment updates that better reflect the real costs of providing primary care.
- Expanded use of the G2211 add-on code, supporting longitudinal and complex patient relationships.
- New mental and behavioral health codes that reward integrated, team-based care.
- A continuing need for Congressional action to make these changes sustainable.
These updates mark important progress toward a payment system that truly values the work of family physicians.
Speak Out: Tell Congress to Stand Firm on Medicare Physician Fee Schedule
The recently finalized 2026 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule marks a major step toward fairer payment for family physicians, but some specialty groups are urging Congress to block a key provision known as the efficiency adjustment. This policy helps ensure that payment for medical services reflects the real time and cost it takes to deliver care today — correcting years of undervaluation for primary care and office-based practices. The AAFP strongly supports allowing this policy to move forward, and your voice matters.
Take two minutes to contact your members of Congress and tell them to support pro–primary care reforms in the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule. Use the AAFP Speak Out tool.
