Learning Objectives:
· Examine the level of evidence, clinically preventable burden and cost effectiveness associated with preventive health services recommendations.
· Identify available tools and resources on priority preventive health services recommendations.
· Apply strategies for implementing priority preventive health services in clinical practice.
Overview:
The delivery of evidence-based preventive health services has improved in the U.S. over the past decade, yet the delivery of some services remains low. For example, the majority of people at risk for colorectal cancer are not being screened. Limited clinician time and competing demands contribute to the sporadic delivery of needed preventive care. This webcast will review the new Colorado Clinical Guidelines Collaborative (CCGC) Guideline for Preventive Health Services which concisely outlines for primary care providers the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force clinical preventive services recommendations and prioritizes the recommendations by clinically preventable burden and cost effectiveness. This guideline aims to help the primary care provider quickly assess health risks and provide health education counseling, screening tests and immunizations for patients at different life stages. Additionally, the guideline links providers to other info rmation or guidelines on chronic conditions and therapeutic lifestyle changes. Other tools and strategies for implementing preventive health care services in clinical practices will be shared including a flow sheet for medical charts, patient handouts and use of a web-based registry and communication tool.
